Lifesawitch Stimuli, Exercise 11/30/09

I opened a book on my shelf and picked noun at random. I chose "eyes," which was the first noun I saw. I brainstormed everything I could think of related to eyes. My list of words was long, but then I got to "sad eyes," "puppy eyes" and then "eyes as big as saucers..." which described a dog in a fairytale I had in a book when I was a little kid. I drew the dog for my daily sketch and my exercise this week:

Lifesawitch Showing up, Day 6

Almost didn't make it today! So I made myself fill the little page of the little sketchbook. Can you see that a scholar has a desk in a tower room and that he's spilled some ink on his paper?

Tomorrow is the last day of my "showing up" challenge.. but I will continue to make daily sketches until the little sketchbook is filled. Continue

Lifesawitch Showing Up, Day 5

Yep, I did it. I had a photo of a Nash metropolitan up on the screen and sketched it into my daily sketchbook. I think my pen and paper art looks very old style cartoony.

I discovered I like the fine point sharpies in my little sketchbook MUCH better than ball point, which tends to skip on this rough paper. Continue

Lifesawitch Showing up, Day 4

Lifesawitch Showing Up, Day 3

Day 3 happened to be on Thanksgiving so i did not show up. I think I will give myself a pass so long as I show up today (Day 4!). Continue

Lifesawitch Showing up--Day 2

In the midst of holiday prep, I did show up! I did a sketch of Tina in my little sketchbook. I don't think it's in the spirit of the exercise to do your sketch in front of the TV with family around, because I'm supposed to FOCUS on the art or writing. But I think holiday prep is extenuating circumstances, don't you? Continue

Lifesawitch Showing Up, Day 1

I have a very small sketch book here at my desk. I have doodled some minor figures and an idea for a scene from the comic. It's very much okay that what I've done is not good because it's the doing of it that's important. Today, I showed up! Continue

Lifesawitch Clothed Figure (Exercise for 7/17/09)

I went back to posemaniacs.com and chose a "floating" figure:

I didn't get the posture of the figure as well as I might have, and I made the sleeves d… Continue

Lifesawitch Drawing the human figure, Exercise 7-10-09

As you can see, I did one pose from front and back (nice feature of posemaniacs.com is that you can rotate the figures any which way) for the male and the female was the "pose of the day" when I did this exercise. I grabbed the image with my cursor and swung it back and forth with my eyes closed and stopped.. I then drew her from the random angle it "stopped" on. As you ca… Continue

George Ward Figure Drawing

Here is the inked contour drawing of the figure I sketched. I used a figure from Posemaniacs and added hair. I left the figure nude so that clothes could be added in the next exercise. In life drawing class we never inked our sketch… Continue

Lifesawitch Shapes and Shadows

Oh man.. this kind of thing is what I imagined the Sketch Out would help me with. Just doing this basic exercise refreshed me SO MUCH. Thank you George!

I found doing the light from below the most difficult since there would be no floor on which the shape would cast a shadow. I am not pleased with the look of the face objects, but forcing myself to consider the pla… Continue

George Ward Lamp and Flowers

Here is my sketch of a lamp and some flowers. I went to a friends house today and drew these while she was busy packing for her trip next weekend. I like how the flowers came out. I surprise myself sometimes. Continue

Lifesawitch The Lamp Still Life

I moved the lamp from my desk over to the kitchen table. On the table, I have a large vase with some nearly spent gladiolas in it. I turned on the lamp and placed my current book and reading glasses there.

It is hard to draw a crystal vase. I don't even think you can tell it's crystal. Also, I couldn't make it appear that the lamp was ON. Can you do that in p… Continue

George Ward Hero, Robot, Monster

Here are my characters, Zetork, Arlina, and Taddin as a hero, robot, and monster (medusa). I've drawn my characters so often that this was easier then I though it would be. Enjoy. Continue

Barry Buchanan My completed assignment of Monster, robot, or super hero.

I made the assignment but could not decide between the 3 choices. I already did a "mock" superhero that I copuld have just cut and pasted, but that would not be fair. After a solid week of working and sleeping and little else, today has quieted down. So I spent my lunch… Continue

Lifesawitch Zelda as a Superhero

The exercise was to draw our characters as super heroes! What a fun idea. I have always wanted to be good enough to draw superheroes. This exercise has proved to me that I am NOT anywhere good enough, but I am enjoying the attempt. I say "enjoying" because I am intending to do my whole comic family as super heroes, but I am struggling. This is the only character I would dream of posting. I am still going, though. I will post a pic of the whole family together and being heroic soon, but I wanted… Continue

George Ward faces

Here are my faces. I'm completely worn out from all the heavy lifting and digging I've been doing this week, so all you get is the rough sketches. I've been drawing different faces for a long time, so I did something a little different with this image and angled the heads somewhat. Edit… Continue
